CLARSKSDALE, MISS.—The Brick Gallery
is pleased to announce the opening of an
exhibit of new works by Mississippi artist
J. Scott Gavin. "Landscapes Redefined" showcases
Gavin's mood-driven, oil-on-canvas landscape
paintings. A Mississippi native who studied
architecture at the University of Texas,
Arlington, Gavin is influenced by the wide-open
spaces and extreme weather patterns he's
experienced in both states.
"My paintings reflect the environments
that have surrounded me most of my life.
Wide-open spaces with violent weather—and
no influence of man—are usually the
subject of my paintings, although sometimes
man's intrusion does show up," says
Gavin.
"My goal with each painting is not
to create a photo-realistic look at nature,
but to create a straightforward view, void
of the minute details that so often keep
us from seeing what is right in front of
us."
After architectural stints in New York
and Texas, Gavin worked for several years
specializing in decorative paint finishes
and furniture design for a design firm
in Dallas. Gavin returned home to Mississippi
nine years ago to open his own company,
J. Scott Gavin Design, which features one-of-a-kind
antique and contemporary pieces along with
his own designs.
"Landscapes Redefined" opens
with an artist's reception on Friday, April
4, 2008 from 5 'til 8 p.m. (Exhibit preview,
April 3rd, 10 a.m. 'til 5 p.m.)
